Many people worry about safety when it comes to purchasing an electric mattress pad or heated blanket. The design and quality of these electric gadgets have improved a lot over the years and as long as you get one that conforms to the UL964 standard, set forth by the US National Electric Code on electric heating and bedding, there shouldn’t be any reason for concern.
Another question on people’s mind is whether to buy an electric heated mattress pad or its cousin the electric blanket? It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the two are opposites. One is meant to keep the top of the body warm while the other provides heat beneath the body. So the decision is very much up to the individual user and their preference.
An electric mattress pad or cover does have some advantage over a heated blanket though. Remember that the heat generated travels upward, so it is easy to understand that an electric blanket will be less efficient in keeping you warm in comparison to a mattress pad.
Another thing to consider is that a heated mattress pad offers you a lot more flexibility in decorating you bed. You can purchase any style of duvet, comforter set, bed sheets and pillows which might not be that easy with an electric blanket. You can likewise by an electric mattress pad king or electric mattress pad queen size to suit your needs. There are other advantages which I will save for another article.
As for safety, apart from always purchasing a blanket or mattress cover that contains the UL964 label, one should also keep in mind that an electric mattress pad is not recommended for young children, people suffering from diabetes or bed watering. Although you can find waterproof heated mattress pads on the market today, it is still advisable to keep these safety instructions in mind.
Since the early days of heated mattress pads and blankets maintenance and care has become a lot easier. Generally speaking they can easily be washed and cleaned at home in a normal washing machine. All it takes is removing the electrical wiring beforehand.
All in all, electric blankets and mattress pads have evolved very much like the electric tooth brush. In its early days few people used an electric tooth brush while as now it comes highly recommended by dentists, even surpassing the efficiency of a manual tooth brush.
The same is true for an electric mattress pad in the sense that it can be highly beneficial for people suffering from a bad blood circulation, arthritis or certain back pains. The conclusion is that should you consider purchasing an electric blanket or mattress pad there is very little or no reason not to do so.
